James Gray just graduated from The University of Texas at Austin. James is now working on the product and business development team at Sparefoot. He was also the lead organizer of the 10th 3DS Austin in Spring 2013 when he was still a student.
James says the most rewarding part of organizing the program was to see teams progress from start to finish. He also enjoyed trying new things during the organizing process, hearing input from fellow organizers, and trying to launch a bigger and better program than the previous 3DS Austin he participated in. “It was also really fun. We got to work with some really big sponsors like Intuit,” he says.

While the three of us were MakerSquare students, we were approached with the opportunity to participate in 3 Day Startup Austin, an intensive weekend workshop where participants attempt to develop a business idea and launch it in one weekend. 3 Day Startup places heavy emphasis on validating a product-market fit and making sure that people actually want the product that you are creating.
We could see no better opportunity to put the skills that we were learning at MakerSquare to the test than to see if we could successfully build and launch a web product in one weekend. In lieu of a MakerSquare hackathon, we opted to participate in 3DS.
3DS Austin recently hosted it’s 11th program in October. Our friends from UPG Video came out to document the special weekend. Check out the short to get a feel of what hands-on entrepreneurship education really means!
3 Day Startup was founded in 2008 in Austin, TX and has expanded to universities worldwide. Since the inception of the first Austin program, there have been many success stories that have emerged. A few of the companies that have raised significant funding after participating in 3DS Austin are Famigo, Ordoro, and Compare Metrics.
3 Day Startup Austin is excited to add a new layer of interactive engagement to the upcoming three-day weekend. We’re excited to announce a social media contest for students to respond via tweet, Instagram or video with daily entries and responses to the weekend’s daily topics.
Our friends at UPG Video and Social Distillery will be on-site to collect video testimonials – one of three ways to enter to win – so keep an eye out for the guys with a camera!
Prizes entrants will be entered to win include:
